The Report of the 7th Meeting of

ISA Technical Committee on Standardization (TCS7)

The 7th Meeting of the ISA Technical Committee on Standardization (TCS7) was held on July 13th, 2015 in Beijing, China.

Mr. Alex Baker the Chair of ISA TCS chaired the meeting, which was attended by over thirty representatives from research initiatives, corporations, and organizations, including Osram, Cree, lumileds, Inventronics, Shineon, GYLED CSA, SABIC, Lattice Power, SKL, the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS), etc.

The meeting commenced following welcome statement by Madam Ling Wu, President of ISA and Mr. Alex Baker.

Currently there were five working groups with their dedicated research projects as below:

The first project, “Research Development of CycLED Program: Progress Update LED Recycling and Full Life Cycle” was presented by Dr. Stanley Leung from the State Key Laboratory of Solid State Lighting (SKL), regarding the optimization of materials in the entire life cycle of LED technology, integrating reuse and recycling of material from raw material production to waste management.

The second project, “LED road lighting products in cold regions: Performance Requirements,” was presented by Dr. Lei Shi from CSAS. The project aimed on expanding the applicability of LED technology by investigating, evaluating, and standardizing LED performance in “Cold Zones” with extremely low environment temperature of the world.

The third project, “Research and Development of Health Oriented Lighting in Asia,” was presented by a representative on behalf of Mr. Harry Noguchi of Panasonic. The project aimed to create an outline of a statement to be issued from ISA that included observations on the lighting situation in Asia and a concrete proposal to include scientific findings regarding standards and progress.

The fourth project, “Research on the Index of Healthy and Comfortable Lighting” was presented by representatives of the China National Institute of Standardization on behalf of Dr. Jianqi Cai.  This project created an objective test system to test for detrimental effects of LED lighting on visual acuity, cognition, and health.

The final project, “Research on Lighting Control” was presented remotely by Dr. Ke Zhang from Osram. The project aimed to promote open standards considering controls of LED lighting in residential and public environments.

Each presentation followed by open-floor discussion, questions and suggestions and with the conclusion by the Chair.

Within the new proposal segment, there were 2 new proposals had been presented as below:

The first proposal, “Application Layer Communication Protocols for the Interface in Intelligent Public LED Lighting Systems” given by Dr. Lei Shi, was an introduction to the current standards for Intelligent public lighting for future discussions regarding new standards towards intelligent lighting in the future.

The second proposal, “Interface requirements for application of LED lighting—Electronic control gear for LED modules for indoor lighting,” given by Robert Luo from Inventronics looked to standardize control gear considering the numerous new designs and parameters in the market given the progress of the LED industry. This new proposal had successfully attracted the research interests from Osram, Shineon and CSA. With the permission of TCS Chair, the new working group WG6 had been established with these TCS members and Dr. Robert LUO had been assigned as the WG leader.

The meeting was concluded by Mr. Alex Backer with a summary of past proceedings and enumeration of steps to be taken before the next convention of TCS8 to be held November 2nd, 2015.
