1. The Preparatory Meeting

The Preparatory Meeting (Organizing Committee Meeting) of the 11th Meeting of BRIC SSL Collaboration Working Group was held on May 14th, 2024 in the form of webinar. The meeting was divided into two parts: one was to discuss and determine the topics of the meeting, so as to help the meeting agenda more targeted and reflect the concerns and interests of BRICS countries in the development of SSL. The second was to determine the date of the meeting. The representative of APSS, Russia chaired the meeting (Russia is the host country for BRICS Summit in the year 2024). The representatives of BRICS countries attended this preparatory meeting.

After discussion the Preparatory Meeting suggested that the topics of the 11th Meeting of BRICS SSL WG should cover the following areas

- Smart lighting;

- UV LED;

- SSL standard;

- Smart lighting pole;

- LED accelerated testing.

The Meeting also agreed the date of the 11th Meeting proposed by the Secretariat i.e. on July 17-19, 2024.

2. the 11th Meeting of BRICS SSL WG and the BRICS Smart Lighting Industry Summit

The opening ceremony was held on July 17th, 2024, Mr. Llya Efimov, Director of APSS, Russia, chaired the opening ceremony.

Ms. Pei LI, Director of International Cooperation Division, International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) delivered a welcome address. 

Dr. Jianlin CAO, the President of ISA and the former Vice Minister of MOST, delivered his welcome remarks.

Ms. Olga Grekova, Director General of APSS, Russia, who was unable to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony of the meeting due to technical reasons, extended her warm congratulations to the meeting, through the moderator, and best wishes to the participants.

3.2The First Session: The 11th Meeting of BRICS SSL WG (17 July 2024)

The 11th Meeting of BRICS SSL WG was held on July 17th, 2024. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Llya Efimov, Director of APSS, Russia.

The meeting followed the opening ceremony, 2 experts were invited to give the keynote speeches on the topic of smart lighting and new wireless short-range communication, and 12 delegates from government, SSL Research Institutes, universities, and associations etc. of BRICS countries and “BRICS +” introduced the application status, market trends and development prospects of SSL in their respective countries.

3.2.1 Dr. Sergio Celaschi, Researcher of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations / CTI, Brazil, made a presentation on “Status, challenges, needs, and trends of SSL industry in Brazil. The cooperative project between China and CTI (China-Brazil SSL Joint Innovation Center)”. (Video participation) 

3.2.2 Mr. Georges Blum, Executive President of Brazilian Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Lighting Products (Abilumi), made a presentation on “The Last Year Brazil Products Importation Data and the Main Market Quality Concerns”. (Video participation)

3.2.3 Ms. Yan LU, Application Expert of Unilumin Lighting, China delivered a keynote speech on “Smart Road Lighting in China”.

3.2.4 Dr. Wu Yong, Chief expert on industrial development, international SparkLink Alliance,, delivered a keynote speech on “SparkLink: New Wireless Short-range Communication Technology and Smart Lighting Applications”.

3.2.5 Dr. Anton Chernyakov, Senior Researcher of SHM R&E Center, Russian Academy of Science made a presentation on “Micro-LED; Sino-RUS Collaboration”.

3.2.6 Mr. Hrishikesh Ta, Vertical Head – Lighting, R&D, Bajaj Electricals Limited,India made a presentation on “The Situation of SSL Market in India”.

3.2.7 Ms. Yuanyuan XU, representative of China SSL Alliance (CSA) made a presentation on “China SSL Industry and Its 20 Years of Development Experience”.

3.2.8 Mr. Jeremiah Mathobela, Director of Electrotechnical department, South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) made a presentation on “The Development Status of SSL Industry in South Africa”.

3.2.9 Dr. Trofimov Yuri, Director of Center of LED and Optoelectronic Technologies of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, made a presentation on “The Government Policies, Strategies, R&D, Current Status and Industry Needs of SSL Development in Belarus”.

3.2.10 Mr. Dmitry Yezhov, Deputy director of foreign trade center of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia delivered a short speech by video participation. He made a brief introduction of his Center and expressed that his Center would like to provide services to and facilitate the activities of this Group with the aim to promote  SSL development and trade related activities among the BRICS countries.

3.2.11Mr. Sergey Lishik, Scientific secretary - Head of the R&D department, Center of LED and Optoelectronic Technologies of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus made a presentation on “The current status of a joint Belarus-Chinese project with Fudan University, China”.

3.2.12 Dr. Jiajie Fan, Youth Professor, Fudan University, China made a presentation on “Solid State Lighting System Reliability Modeling based on Full Lifecycle Digital Twins”.

3.2.13 Mr. Nguyen Doan Ket, Vice President of Vietnam Lighting Association, made a presentation on “The development status of SSL industry in Vietnam”.

3.2.14 Dr. Acharawan Chutarat, Director of Department of International Cooperation, Illuminating Engineering Association of Thailand made a presentation on “The government policies, strategies, R&D, current status and industry needs of SSL development in Thailand”.

3.3 The second Session: The BRICS Smart Lighting Industry Summit (Morning of July 18, 2024)

The BRICS Smart Lighting Industry Summit was held on the morning of July 18th, 2024. The meeting was moderated by Mr. Ruisheng Yue of the Secretariat of BRICS SSLWG.

3.3.1 Mr. Chao FANG, Technical director of Shenzhen EXC-LED Technology Co., Ltd., China made a presentation on “Leading the future | EXC Landscape & Road lighting innovation technology sharing”.

3.3.2 Mr. Jack CHEN, Senior R&D Director; Head of New Product Introduction Region EU, LEDVANCE Operation & Management (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. China made a presentation on “From Line to Loop, Grean Transition in LEDVANCE”.

3.3.3 Ms. Cherry LI, vice director of EVERFINE Institute of Optoelectronics, China made a presentation on “Technology and Standardization of Measurement for Efficient and Smart Lighting.

(EVERFINE was the main provider of testing equipment for the " Sino-Brazil Solid State Lighting Joint Innovation Center" (testing laboratory)).

3.3.4 Ms. Poet LI, Head of Product Portfolio Compact Systems – Eurasia, Inventronics, China made a presentation on Innovation and evolution of DALI lighting systems”.

3.3.5 Ms. Lijuan CHEN, International Sales Manager of Shenzhen Jinhong Lighting Co.,LTD. China made a presentation on “Innovative LED Automobile Lighting Application”.

3.3.6 Mr. Tony JIANG, Product Expert of Tuya Smart, China made a presentation on “The Total Solution for Smart Roadway Lighting from Tuya Smart”.

3.3.7 Mr. Pei QING, Chief Deputy Engineer of Shanghai Sansi Electronic Engineering Co., Ltd. China made a presentation on “Exploring the Innovative Applications and Future Trends of Smart Lighting Systems: A Case Study on the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link Project”.

3.3.8 Mr. Henry So, Secretary General of the Smart Pole Industry Alliance, China made a presentation on “An Overview of the Development of the Smart Pole Industry in China”.

A number of above presentations were followed by Q/As.

3.4 The third Session: The Meeting of BRICS and “BRICS +” SSL International Standardization (Afternoon of July 18, 2024)

The Meeting of BRICS and “BRICS +” SSL International Standardization was held on the afternoon of July 18th, 2024. The meeting was moderated ed by Mr. Ruisheng Yue of  the Secretariat of BRICS SSLWG.

3.4.1 Mr. Michael J. Scholand, Deputy Manager, SSLC Platform, IEA 4E made a presentation on “IEA 4E Smart Sustainability in Lighting and Controls (SSLC) Platform”.

3.4.2 Dr. Sergio Celaschi, Researcher of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations / CTI made a presentation on “The SSL standards in Brazil”. (Video participation)

3.4.3 Mr. Santosh Agnihotri, General Manager & Head (Quality & Technical) of Orient Electric Limited, India made a presentation on “The SSL standards in India”.

3.4.4 Ms. Yuanyuan XU, Vice Secretary General of CSA Standardization Committee (CSAS), China made a presentation on “The development trend of SSL standardization in China”.

3.4.5 Mr. Jeremiah Mathobela, Director of Electrotechnical department of SABS, South Africa made a presentation on “The SSL standards in South Africa”.

3.4.5 Mr. Yuan FU, Executive Secretary of ISA, made a presentation on “The Introduction of ISA Technical Committee on Standardization (TCS)”.

3.4.6 Dr. Yuri Trofimov, Director of Center of LED and Optoelectronic Technologies of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus made a presentation on “The SSL standards in Belarus”.

3.4.7 Dr. Acharawan Chutarat, Director of Department of International Cooperation, of Illuminating Engineering Association of Thailand made a presentation on “The SSL standards in Thailand”.

3.4.8 Mr. Nguyen Doan Ket, Vice President of Vietnam Lighting Association made a presentation on “System of standards, regulations and testing capacity for solid-state lighting products in Vietnam”.

A number of above presentations were followed by Q/As.

Mr. Ruisheng Yue briefly summarized the session with that

- We learned about the standardization systems of each country by the presentations and got to know who were responsible to develop the standards.

- We got to know the current standards which had been applying and the dominated standards which had been adopted. 

- We were aware the needs and challenges of the standards in BRICS countries such as in the area of smart lighting and “beyond lighting”, which was the direction of this Group should make efforts to pursue.

Mr. Yue encouraged more intersessional communication among the participants and particularly to join the ISA TCS to form a working group and to collectively tackle the specific issues on standards that we concerned.

3.5 The site visits (19 July 2024)

On July 19, 2024, 11 representatives of BRICS and “BRICS +” countries visited the exhibition rooms and the manufacture sites of the  Shenzhen EXC-LED Technology Co., Ltd. and the Unilumin Group.

In the morning of July 19, Ms. Meiling HU, Sales Director , of Shenzhen EXC-LED Technology Co., Ltd. Received the delegates on behalf of the company. She introduced the latest progress of the company's development history and products. During the visit, the delegates discussed the topic of "light and shadow, manufacturing of smart lighting street lamps".

In the afternoon of July 19, Ms. Yan LU, General manager of Lighting Division of Unilumin Group received the delegates on behalf of the company. The staff of company introduced the latest progress of its development history, display products and engineering cases. During the visit, the delegates discussed the topic of "Manufacturing and application of smart lighting street lamps and EMC projects".

The BRICS Smart Lighting Industry Summit and the11th Meeting of BRICS SSL Collaboration Working Group (BRICSSSL-WG) was held from July 17 to 19, 2024 in Shenzhen, China and officially concluded after the site visit.
