The 7th Meeting of BRICS SSL Collaboration Working Group was held on 14-15 July 2020. Due to the global COVID-19 epidemic, the meeting was held in the form of webinar (by Zoom). The meeting was organized by the Secretariat of BRICS SSL Collaboration Working Group (The Secretariat of International SSL Alliance (ISA)).
34 delegates from Ministry of Science and Technology, Research Institutes and SSL industries of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) participated in the meeting.
20 delegates from scientific research institutes, universities and SSL industries of 10 countries, i.e. Austria, Belarus, Chile, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, UK, USA, Vietnam and Zambia also participated in the meeting.
The representative from the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST), delivered a welcome remark at the meeting.

Nearly 100 people attended the meeting.
The meeting lasted for 2 days, the first session on 14 July focused on the mechanism research, research and development progress, application status and development prospect of Deep UV LED in sterilization. The second session on 15 July would focus on "Beyond lighting" such as smart lighting (smart city), visible light communication (VLC/LiFi), micro-LED and LED applications in intelligent poultry farming.
The meeting was moderated by the head of the Secretariat of BRICS SSL Collaboration Working Group.
The moderator invited representatives from the governments, research institutions, associations and societies of the BRICS countries to give their views and guidance on the meeting and the future work of the BRICS SSL Cooperation Working Group, some views were expressed as follows,
This meeting was very timely and the theme was selected much focused which met the needs of BRICS countries. The content of the meeting had an educational and enlightening effects, and was effective and timely. The meeting clarified some key issues, especially, the participants had a more comprehensive understanding of the R&D achievements, standards, tests, and the respective advantages of available products, use scenarios and development prospects of DUV (LED and traditional products) in the fields of disinfection, germicidal. And the participants also got a clear understanding of the role and status of SSL in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Suggesting to make full use of this platform and the established network resources. It was recommended to set up sub-working groups such as ultraviolet UV-LED, agricultural lighting, LiFi, and health lighting under the BRICS SSL Collaboration WG, as well as holding webinars from time to time. It was recommended also to take a combination of webinars and on-site meetings to increase the frequency of holding meetings of BRICS SSL Collaboration WG and increase opportunities for communication.
The competent countries in the BRICS SSL Collaboration WG (such as India and China) could learn from each other and jointly promote the innovation and application of SSL in third-party countries and regions (such as the Middle East, Africa, etc.).
The representatives from Brazil expressed their willingness to cooperate with China on this platform in smart lighting, classroom lighting, visible light communication, smart lighting for poultry and prevention of vector insects.
The representatives from South African National Institute of Metrology (NMISA) and South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) expressed their willingness to cooperate with ISA and Chinese side in developing UV-LED products test methods and formulation of related standards.

Dr. Jianlin Cao, special guest of the meeting, president of ISA, and the former vice minister of China's Ministry of Science and Technology participated in the two-days meeting and also participated in the discussion of most topics. He made a conclusive remark on behalf of ISA in the closing session as follows.
It was very timely to hold this meeting in the condition of the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to everyone's efforts, the meeting was very successful and achieved the expected results.
Through the two-day meeting, participants further understood the role of SSL in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic particularly the DUV LEDs. SSL can do more in many aspects of "beyond lighting".
The meeting strengthened everyone's awareness of technological innovation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and strengthened the confidence in scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation to jointly fight against the epidemic.
The Secretariat of the ISA, serving as the Secretariat of this Group should provide better services for the cooperation of the BRICS countries in SSL.
The Secretariat announced that the PPTs presented at the meeting would be distributed to the participants of this meeting and ISA members by ISA Secretariat after the meeting.
