The 10th Meeting

1. The Preparatory Meeting

The Preparatory Meeting (Organizing Committee Meeting) of the 10th Meeting of BRIC SSL Collaboration Working Group was held on April 27th, 2023 in the form of webinar. The meeting was divided into two parts: one was to discuss and determine the topics of the meeting, so as to help the meeting agenda more targeted and reflect the concerns and interests of BRICS countries in the development of SSL. The second was to determine the date of the meeting. The head of the Secretariat of BRICS SSL WG, on behalf of the Representative of South Africa chaired the meeting (South Africa is the host country for BRICS Summit in the year 2023). The representatives of BRICS countries attended this preparatory meeting.

After discussion the Preparatory Meeting suggested that the topics of the 10th Meeting of BRICS SSL WG should cover the following areas

- Simple smart lighting;

- Digital lighting design;

- Advanced LED display technology;

- Light quality and standard;

- Energy efficiency;

- Fishery fishing lighting;

- LED accelerated testing.

The Meeting also agreed the date of the 10th Meeting proposed by the Secretariat i.e. at the second week of July, 2023.

2. The 10th Meeting of BRICS Solid State Lighting Collaboration Working Group (BRICS SSL WG) 


The 10th Meeting of BRICS Solid State Lighting Collaboration Working Group (BRICS SSL WG) was held from July 12th to 13th 2023. The meeting was organized by the Secretariat of BRICS SSL WG (Secretariat of ISA) and convened in the form of online (Webinar on Zoom).

More than 10 delegates from Ministry of Science and Technology, Research Institutes and SSL industries of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) participated in the meeting.


Other 10 delegates from R&D institutes, universities and SSL industries of about 10 countries, i.e. Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Belarus, USA, Austria, Hungary and Rwanda also participated in the meeting.


The representatives from following organizations participated in this meeting. i.e. Signify, Inventroincs, Tongheng Heming Lighting and Acoustics Institute Co.,Ltd., Havells India Ltd., LLC “Lighting Technologies IGC”, Russia, Zhejiang Gilon Technology Co.,Ltd, China, Fudan University, China, Dongguan Quality Supervision Testing Center, China and China SSL Alliance etc. Nearly 20 people attended the meeting.


More than 100 times people attended the two-days meeting.

The first session on July 12th focused on smart lighting, Phosphor-free LED lighting and application status, market trends and development prospects of SSL in BRICS countries.


The second session on July 13th focused on “Beyond lighting” such as human centric lighting, commercial and industrial lighting, digital urban lighting, automobile lighting, LED display technology, assessment method of light pollution and fisheries lighting etc.


Mr. Duke Nkadimeng, Deputy Director of Overseas Bilateral Relations of Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) on behalf of Mr. Cecil Masoka, Director of Overseas Bilateral Relations of DSI, South Africa, chaired the two days’ meeting as the Chairman of the meeting. (South Africa is the host country for BRICS Summit in the year 2023).

3.The First Session

The first session followed the opening ceremony, 2 experts were invited to give the keynote speeches on the topic of simple smart lighting and Phosphor-free LED lighting, then 7 delegates from government, SSL Research Institutes, universities, associations etc. of BRICS introduced the application status, market trends and development prospects of SSL in their respective countries.

3.2.1 Ms. Yan LU, General Manager of Unilumin Lighting, China delivered a keynote speech on “Light the World with Simple Smart Solution”.

3.2.2 Dr. Guangxu WANG, Deputy Director of Nanchang Laboratory, Nanchang University, China delivered a keynote speech on “Phosphor-free LED lighting and application”.

3.2.3 Mr. Isac Roizenblatt, Technical Director of Abilux, Brazil made a presentation on “Development of SSL Industry in Brazil and its Market Trends”.

3.2.4 Dr. Anton Chernyakov, Senior Researcher of SHM R&E Center, Russian Academy of Science made a presentation on “Common Problems of degradation process and reliability of LED from UV to Green”. 


3.2.5 Dr. Alexander Karev, Director for science of IGC Lighting technologies, Russia made a presentation on “Russian LED Market and National Regime in the Procurement of LED Lighting Equipment”.

3.2.6 Mr. Shyam Sujan, Secretary General of Electric Light and Component Manufacturers Association of India (ELCOMA) made a presentation on “ELCOMA VISION 2030”.

3.2.7 Dr. Jun RUAN, Secretary General of China SSL Alliance (CSA) made a presentation on “China SSL Industry in the post-pandemic era”.

3.2.8 Ms. Tshepang Pheelwane, Technical Lead- Lighting Technology Laboratory, South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) made a presentation on “Development and Progress of SSL Testing Mechanism in South Africa Bureau of Standard”.

3.2.9 Prof. Jiajie FAN, Youth Researcher of Fudan University, China made a presentation on “Accelerated Testing Method for LED Lighting Product”.

2-3 questions were raised from the audience after each presentation and followed with relevant answers by the speakers


3.3 The Second Session

The second session of the meeting was held on July 13th, 2023. The meeting was also chaired by Mr. Duke Nkadimeng, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Innovation of South Africa.

Mr. Cecil Masoka, Director of Overseas Bilateral Relations, Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), South Africa, addressed the meeting on behalf of DSI.

3.3.1 Mr. Fujun WEI, Product Management Senior Director, Signify, China, made a presentation on “Human Centric Lighting”.

3.3.2 Mr. Peter Resca, Director of Marketing Center, Inventroincs, made a presentation on “Market Trends in Commercial and Industrial Lighting”.

3.3.3 Ms. Sudeshna Mukhopadhyay, Vice President and Strategic Consultant of Havells India Ltd., was not able to give an online presentation because of an urgent matter.  Her PPT presentation “Environmental Wellness and Responsible Lighting – Social Context” was sent in advance of the meeting.

3.3.8 Mr. Georges Blum, Executive President of Brazilian Association of the Lighting Products Importers (Abilumi), made a presentation on “Situation and Trends of SSL in Brazil”.

3.3.9 Dr. Benliang LI, Director of photoelectric inspection department, Dongguan Quality Supervision Testing Center, China, made a presentation “Application of LED lighting technology in fishery fishing”.

3.4 The Closing session of two days’ meeting (July 12th and 13th)

3.4.1 At the closing session, Mr. Duke Nkadimeng, the chairman of the meeting, concluded with the following remarks:

He said that the BRICS Solid State Lighting Collaboration Working Group was an excellent collaborative platform and he encouraged all the BRIC countries to keep contact with the Secretariat for any initiatives to organize thematic seminars, innovative applications, R&D updating and market information exchange and suggested that preparations could be made now for the next year’s offline meeting.

Finally, the chairman expressed his gratitude to each guest speaker, the participants and the staff of the Secretariat of the Working Group. Due to the limited time to speak and answer questions, the chair suggested that everyone could contact the Secretariat to obtain the contact information of the speakers for their own interests, so as to have more communication and interaction.

At 21:45 (Beijing time), the chairman announced that the 10th meeting of BRICS Solid State Lighting Collaboration Working Group was held from July 12 to 13, 2023, and officially ended after two days.
