At the third BRICS Senior Officials Meeting of Science, Technology and Innovation held in India in December 12th, 2013, China proposed SSL cooperation within the priority area of “new energy, renewable energy and energy efficiency”. This proposal was well received by delegates from other BRICS countries. The " BRICS SSL Collaboration Working Group" (BRICS SSL WG) established in 2014, the ISA Secretariat was entrusted by the members of the BRICS SSL WG to take the responsibilities of Secretariat and daily work of this Group. The BRICS SSL WG held its meeting once a year and seven meetings have been held since its establishment.

The following benefits have been received by the members and participants of this BRICS SSL WG.

- SSL Innovative paradigm and areas have been expanded in these countries e.g. smart lighting, LiFi, poultry and plant lighting, health lighting, disease control by lighting.

- Get to know the pathes or conclusions for tackling some SSL R&D difficulties e.g. products reliability, accelerated testing, etc..

- Strength the capacity building on SSL R&D and innovation e.g. development strategy, innovation policy, training, complete industrial chain, key issues on SSL innovation, avoiding detours and mistakes. - Access the latest information on SSL standards as well as the way of the standards’ development by participating ISA TCS working meetings, interaction with experts on standards’ interpretation and formulation etc..

- Get to know the latest technologies and products through which to accelerate the wide application of the SSL in their respective countries. 

Starting from the 4th Meeting the participating counties was extended to more countries than just "BRICS" countries. More than 10 participating countries attended thereafter and so called "BRICS +" model.
