ISA General Assembly 2018 was held on Oct. 23rd at Shenzhen Exhibition Center, Shenzhen, China, with more than 70 participants.
The meeting was moderated by Mr. Carlos Lee, member of ISA Council of Management, Director General of European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC).
Madam Ling Wu, the former president of ISA, member of ISA Council of Management on behalf of Dr. Jianlin Cao, the president of ISA, the former vice minister of Ministry of Science and Technology of China, delivered the welcome remarks.
She first welcomed everyone to this ISA family reunion, and expressed her appreciation to the members’ and experts’ involvement and support.
She introduced the achievements of ISA got in the past year which could not be achieved without the strong support and active participation of all the members. She expressed her sincerely appreciation to all the representatives from the members.
She introduced the ISA's achievements over the past year and mentioned that we would simply be not able to make it without the members' strong support and active participation. She pointed out that after more than ten years of development, SSL is becoming more and more mature. It is however still developing at a speed beyond people's imagination in terms of cross-boundary application, entry into new fields and promotion of new industries or new forms of business such as SSL in horticulture, breeding, health, optical communications, smart city and other applications. The breakthrough of micro-led technology will bring us even broader development space, application space and market space.
To echo the needs of our members, ISA will establish the LiFi Committee (ISA LiFi Committee) with the purpose of setting up the platform and lead the way forward. The Committee would introduce the latest R&D achievements, explore the most effective way on R&D path as well as the best market practice.
She said that it is ISA's mission to create a better "ecosystem" for the sustainable development and application of SSL worldwide, and to provide more and more added value services to the members. Achieving this goal will also create greater markets and business opportunities for members. Finally, she wishes the conference a complete success.

4. The Way Forward
1) Prof. Harald Haas, University of Edinburgh, Member of ISA Board of Advisors, presented “LiFi – The Catalyst for New LED Applications”.
Prof. Haas mainly introduced his 5 research field on LiFi; 6 major R&D achievements he had made in the past year, etc. He pointed out that “LiFi is a new wireless communications technology which is fundamentally routed into solid-state lighting as it uses the vast and free optical spectrum to achieve unprecedented wireless connectivity in terms of density of connected devices and data transmission speeds. Peak transmission speeds of 8 Gbps from a single light source have been demonstrated, and complete cellular networks based on LiFi have been created”.
He also discussed some misconceptions and illustrated the potential impact that this technology could across a number of existing and emerging industries. And he also introduced some new applications which LiFi could unlock in the future. Such as that LiFi had the potential to build the ‘nervous system’ of the future artificial intelligence (AI), driven autonomous systems that would underpin the 4th industrial revolution. In this context, LiFi would be the key enabler for a radical service diversification in the lighting industry which would offer new business models in emerging new fields such as smart homes, smart cities, industry 4.0, health and the internet of things, to only name a few.
2) Prof. Nan Chi, Fudan University, presented “LiFi Development in China”.
She first introduced the relevant R&D work in the field of LiFi based on the National Key Research and Development Plan and the development and application situation of LiFi in China. A number of Q/A undertaken after her presentation on issues related to the particular application of LiFi.
3) Prof. Robert Karlicek, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute,Member of ISA Board of Advisors presented “The Future of Lighting”.
Prof. Karlicek expounded some views on the following questions: Is there a need for higher efficacy (and who will pay for it)? Is there such a thing as smart lighting? Some wildcards for SSL’s future. He put forward the in-depth thinking on the future development direction of lighting industry, involving intelligent lighting, healthy lighting, new luminous building materials and other future lighting development directions. The attendees had a heated discussion with prof. Karlicek about the prospect of intelligent lighting, the combination of lighting and building materials, and the challenges and opportunities faced by intelligent lighting in the future.
4) Diana Lu, Head of APAC Product Portfolio, LS, Osram presented “The Future Smart City Solution”
She introduced the strategic deployment for smart lighting of Osram, and proposed a new smart lighting design scheme combined with the new smart city solution.
