The development of solid-state lighting offers many opportunities to design lighting systems that can accelerate the growth of plants for food and medicine. LED sources now offer equivalent or slightly better efficiency in producing light than the best traditional lamps, but the major advantage comes from the adaptability of LED systems to the dynamic needs of growing plants.
