ISA “Global Solid State Lighting Special Report (2017)”(Volume One and Volume Two) have been published

To reflect the trend of global SSL development and meet the needs of its members, the International SSL Alliance (ISA) published “Global Solid State Lighting Special Report (2017)” volume one and volume two, i.e.

1. LiFi – The Catalyst for New LED Application, (2017 Volume One);
2. Applications of Solid State Lighting to Horticulture, (2017 Volume Two).
1.    LiFi – The Catalyst for New LED Application (2017 Volume One)

This report was written by Professor Harald Haas, member of ISA Board of Advisers, LiFi Research and Development Centre, Institute for Digital Communications, University of Edinburgh.

In this report, it first explained what Light-Fidelity (LiFi) was and argue that it was a 5th Generation (5G) technology. Peak transmission speeds of 8 Gbps from a single light source had been demonstrated, and complete cellular networks based on LiFi had been created. The visible light spectrum and infrared spectrum together were 2,600 times larger than the entire radio frequency (RF) spectrum. Trends seen from 2009 to 2016 were used to predict when the spectrum that was required to satisfy the mobile data demand would exceed the entire radio frequency (RF) spectrum. According to the predicted mobile data traffic, the number of cell sites and achievable spectral efficiency for the United States (U.S.), the entire RF spectrum would be fully used by 2035.

Therefore, unlocking the visible light and infrared spectra and deploying indoor/outdoor optical wireless systems would be a necessity for the next generation wireless communication technologies, in order to alleviate the spectrum crunch, and to connect 100 billion Internet-of-Things devices.

The report also discussed numerous misconceptions and illustrated the potential impact this technology could have across a number of existing and emerging industries. It also discussed new applications which LiFi could unlock in the future.

1.    Applications of Solid State Lighting to Horticulture (2017 Volume Two)
This report was written by Dr. Norman Bardsley ISA Chief Analyst.
The report introduced that the development of SSL offers many opportunities to design lighting systems that can accelerate the growth of plants for food and medicine. LED sources now offer equivalent or slightly better efficiency in producing light than the best traditional lamps, but the major advantage comes from the adaptability of LED systems to the dynamic needs of growing plants. This is accomplished through spectral tuning and light distribution. The potential for rapid growth of the market is constrained by the high initial cost of LED lights and the need for further study of the reaction of each specific plant to the intensity and spectrum of light.
This report forecasted the market of plant lighting system, and explained the plant lighting system in terms of efficiency, life time cost, spectrum tuning and spatial distribution etc. And it also analyzed and summarized the existing problems of plant lighting system.
