Award ceremony for Global SSL Events of the Year 2016 - 2017

The results of the award of Global SSL Events of the Year (EOY) 2016 - 2017 was announced on Nov. 1 during ISA 2017 General Assembly at Hilton Beijing Capital Airport, in Beijing, China.
 
Professor Jinmin Li, member of ISA Board of Advisors, on behalf of ISA, announced the results of the award of the Global SSL Events of the Year 2016-2017.
 
Members of ISA Council of Management, Warren Julian, Emeritus Professor of University of Sydney, and members of ISA Board of Advisers, Dr. Yoshi Ohno, President of CIE, Professor Robert Karlicek, Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering, RPI, Professor Istvan Barsony, the former director of Inst. Techn. Phys. & Mat. Science - MFA and ISA Chief Analyst Dr. Norman Bardsley, handed over the award medals and certificates to the representatives of the EOY winners.
 
The winners of EOY for 2016 - 2017 went to (according to the score ranking of the Jury Panel):
1. Breakthrough on Manufacture Technology of High Efficient Yellow LED with 21-30% Power Conversion Efficiency and 130-180 lm/W Luminous Efficacy.

Significance of this event:
The luminous efficiency of yellow LEDs had been greatly improved, which brought great application prospects to the market of display imaging, general lighting and special lighting, and particularly, and built a solid foundation for phosphor free LED lighting. The yellow LEDs mixed with red, green, cyan and blue LEDs could form a white light source with high color rendering index and low color temperature which could minimize the wavelength hazards, and could be provided as a high quality light source with precise spectral adjustable for the application of smart lighting, scene lighting, and visible light communication. The high luminous efficient yellow LEDs would largely broaden the application range of SSL technology.
This achievement kicked off the prelude of the application of phosphor free LED lighting source, which would significantly broaden the application range of SSL technology. Without phosphor, the LED industry could have a sustainable development as it saved the strategic resource of rare earth materials. The response speed of yellow LEDs was much faster than the phosphor converted LEDs, and the yellow LEDs had broad prospects in the application of lighting and communication dual-use light source fields.

The Forum of Global Lighting Challenge (GLC) was held on June 6th, 2017 in Beijing, China, as aside event of the Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) and the Second Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-2). The Forum was co-organized by the GLC working Group (GLC WG) and the International Solid State Lighting Alliance (ISA).

At the CEM6 in May 2015, the GLC WG was established and endorsed by 13 CEM member countries and the representatives from European Commission, and a GLC plan was then put forward. This plan was designed as a public-private partnership to generate commitments from national and subnational governments, big and small businesses, retailers, and others to meet the goal of deploying 10 billion high efficiency, high quality, and affordable advanced lighting products (such as LED bulbs). The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is one of the coordinators of the WG and responsible to oversee the daily work of this WG.

By early publicity and mobilization of the forum organizers before this forum, 13 companies voluntarily announced at the Forum new commitments to GLC totaling nearly 6 billion LED lighting products. Among them, twelve Chinese companies committed to manufacture and sell 3.29 billion LED Lamps and 5.77 million LED Street Lights by the end of 2018.
The energy consumption of these products was calculated as follows
1) LED lamps: use 6W LED Lamp instead of 40W CFL, with 4 working hours per day, 365 days per year;
2) LED street lights: use 70W LED Street Light instead of 150W high-pressure sodium lamp, with working 10 hours per day, 365 days per year.
Based on these commitments, the total cumulative energy savings from 2017-2018 is estimated at more than 45 billion kWh, which is account for roughly half of the China Three Gorges Hydropower Station annual power generation (93.5 billion kWh in 2016). These energy savings leads to CO2 emissions reduction estimated at more than 40.5 million tons.
In addition to the 12 Chinese companies, LEDVANCE - a multinational company for lighting products and networked light applications based in Germany - announced its commitment to sell 2.5 billion LED lamps by 2023. It is estimated that LEDVANCE’s goal will save the equivalent amount of energy produced by 75 medium sized coal fired energy plants.
Statistics by the Global Lighting Challenge Working Group, the GLC has now reached 14 billion high efficiency, high quality and energy efficiency lighting products commitments. The new commitment at this Forum will definitely make substantial contribution to this ambitious target which will ultimately contribute to reduce carbon emissions and mitigating the effect of global climate change.
 
Significance of this event:
1. Promoted to establish the public awareness of the link between efficient lighting and reducing carbon emissions;
2. The 13 companies have made their own contributions to the global carbon dioxide emissions reduction by their specific commitments; 
3. Improved the awareness and self-consciousness of global private enterprises to participate in mitigating global climate change actively;
4. Urged governments to take action to accelerate the application and deployment of efficient lighting products around the world;
5. Presented a demonstration and played a leading role in promoting the deployment of advanced lighting products for global lighting enterprises.
