The ISA General Assembly 2023 was held on the morning of Nov. 29, 2023 at Xiamen International Conference Center, Xiamen, China. More than 40 ISA Executive Member Meeting (EMM) members, ISA members and non-members representatives from China, Australia, Belgium, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Brazil attended the meeting.

The meeting was moderated by Mr. Carlos Lee, Director General of EPIC, Member of ISA Council of Management.

Dr. Jianlin Cao, President of ISA, delivered his welcome address.

He said that after three years of the epidemic, he was very happy to meet us here. He thanked all the participants.

He pointed out that since last year, affected by the global economic downturn and unexpected events, China’s industrial, consumption and other economic indicators had fallen. Taking China’s SSL industry as an example, the overall scale of the industry had shown a downward trend. Except relative prosperous in the domestic market for automotive LED, the demand for each market segment had shown varying degrees of contraction.  

Take a look of the first half of 2023, the global SSL was gradually recovering. The remarkable feature was that the performance of each track was clearly differentiated, such as new displays, automotive lighting, smart systems, educational lighting, sports lighting and so on. Developing new channels had become the mainstream action of enterprises in 2023. Overall, China’s SSL industry was still in an advantageous position in terms of global scale and supply chain. Especially in the field of beyond lighting, cross-border applications, smart lighting, health lighting, green low-carbon, etc., would become the leading direction for SSL to enter a new stage of development.

He said that looking at the whole world, SSL was entering the replacement period of stock at the same time, the pace of technological innovation was getting faster and faster, the degree of cross-border integration was also getting higher and higher, and new application areas were constantly being born. people in this industry should seize the opportunity to enter the “new track”, take up the “new highland”, and forge ahead a   “new market”.

He pointed out that over the past year, ISA, under the leadership of the EMM and with the support of members, had carried out work in the following areas.

Firstly, the work of various ISA specialized committees was actively carried out.

ISA Standardization Technical Committee (TCS) work was more standardized and solid. Actively participated in the activities of other international standardization organizations. Two seminars were held respectively on Micro-LED and Photonics for Light Therapy and Aesthetics Applications” with the European Optoelectronics Industry Association; ISA Global Annual LiFi Conference 2023 was held.

 

Secondly, strengthened cooperation with BRICS countries. The 10th BRICS SSL Cooperation Working Group Meeting was held this year, which promoted the development and further application of the SSL industry in BRICS countries.

 

Thirdly, three Awards were released. He expressed his sincere thanks to all the winners for their contributions to the development of the global SSL industry.

 

Fourthly, from the beginning of this year, ISA developed the Global SSL Quarterly Report. In which the development of the global SSL industry was dynamically introduced from the aspects of technological innovation, new product launched and market changed. He hoped to provide valuable reference for ISA members.

This year, ISA also established a new UV LED Committee, aiming to respond to the needs of the global SSL industry and market, and made the due contributions of the LED industry to human health.

He welcomed the six new members who joined the ISA this year.

He said that in 2024, the six sub-committees of ISA would have offline meetings, and he encouraged everyone would actively participate.

He said that the above achievements had been achieved with the guidance of the ISA Executive Member Meeting, as well as the active participation and support of all ISA members. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to everyone.

He finally emphasized  that in the past two years, SSL was brewing new changes. Seeking survival and development in the process of change was the path and spirit of the development of China and even the global SSL industry. He hoped that everyone would continue to work hard, forge ahead, adapt to new changes, and constantly create new achievements. Under the joint efforts of all of us,  the global SSL industry will be promoted to a new level and  a new stage of more prosperous development of global SSL will be created.

2. ISA TCS Working Report 2023

Dr. Yoshi Ohno, Member of ISA Board of Advisors, Past President of CIE, Chairman of ISA TCS, made a working report of the Technical Committee on Standardization, including one TCS meeting (TCS23), the cooperation with other international standardization organizations (ISO and CIE), as well as the work progress of the working groups, the update of the TCS work policy, the consultation on the draft standard, voting and future work plan, the TCS24 meeting will be held on November 30, 2023.

3. ISA Working Report 2023

Mr. Ruisheng Yue, the Co-Secretary General of ISA, reported the General Assembly 2023 on the work implemented by the Secretariat and ISA different committees which including:

Section two: SSL Development

1. Prof. Georges ZISSIS, Chairman of the 4E-Solid State Lighting Annex of the International Energy Agency; Chair of IEEE Smart Lighting Initiative; Full Professor and Vice-Rector of Toulouse 3 University (France); Member of ISA Board of Advisors made a presentation on “Affordable Smart Lighting – the SSL2 concept” by video.

2. Mr. Jan Denneman, Chair of Good Light Group, Former President of GLA, made a presentation on “The smart way forward: target health and well-being” by video.

3. Mr. Jack Chen, Head of R&D from LEDVANCE Operation & Management (Shenzhen) made a presentation on “Beyond luminance, sustainable innovations”.

4. Dr. Norman Bardsley, Advisor of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SSL WG, CEO of Bardsley Consulting, ISA Chief Analyst, made a presentation on “Global SSL Industry Development and Market Trends”.

Section three: The Inauguration of ISA UV LED Committee

Prof. Jinmin Li, Former Director of Institute of Semiconductors, CAS, Chairman of ISA UV LED Committee, Member of ISA Board of Advisors, delivered a speech.

He pointed out that in recent years, with the implementation of the Minamata Convention and the global concern for environmental health continues to rise, ultraviolet LED technology had also achieved rapid development, which had attracted the attention of academia and the scientific and technological industry. At the same time, the application of UVA, UVB, UVC and other different bands of ultraviolet LED had been gradually developed, and the applicable fields were more extensive, at present, the application of ultraviolet LED had brought great convenience to a number of industries.

He pointed out that UV LED had verity of characteristics such as safety and environmental protection, high precision, good stability etc., which compared with traditional technical means had obvious advantages.With the progress of scientific research and product iteration, in sterilization, rapid curing, skin treatment, optical detection, chemical synthesis and other aspects of the application has gradually matured, worldwide, Ultraviolet LED technology was widely used in medical, industrial, scientific research and other fields, had become one of the important development directions in the field of modern science and technology.

In addition, the potential application areas of UV LEDs were very broad and full of imagination. But the current UV LED technology and application there were many bottlenecks and limitations, in order to overcome the technical and application problems, the international community of scientific research and industrial institutions communication and exchange would be an essential key link, which would greatly promote the development of UV LED technology and application promotion, bring benefits to many industries. It provided unlimited opportunities for the development of the upstream and downstream industrial chain, and would also bring unprecedented significance and value to the society.

He said that the establishment of the ISA UV LED Committee would be committed to promoting international UV LED academic exchanges and promoting international UV LED technology research and development and industrial promotion through demonstration applications and project cooperation. At the same time, the committee would also promote the development of relevant standards in the field of UV LED, provide guidance for the future development of UV LED, so that UV LED could develop healthily in the long run, and really played a practical role in more fields and a wider range of Spaces.

He finally said that the future of UV LED had a long way to go, and he hoped that all members would work together to achieve win-win results and contribute their best efforts to the development of the international UV LED industry.

This year, a total of three SSL industry leaders were awarded. They were: Mr. Isac Roizenblatt (Brazil), Mr. Jan W. Denneman (Netheland), Prof. Jiangen Pan (China).
